Yoga is my passion, but another passion of mine is Sustainability. Now to the lay person, or perhaps a person that doesn’t live in the “earth friendly bubble” of south Bellingham, I would like to define this term. I believe that sustainability is the responsible use of our resources to prolong our time here on this planet. The well being of the globe depend on the actions, habits and lifestyles of those who live on it. Global warming alone has a tremendous impact on our planet and for those sitting at home reading this blog, it may seem like such a large problem that we can’t even begin to comprehend making a difference. I would like to take the opportunity to give people a bit of hope, because without hope we really have nothing.

Look at the world from a new perspective. Organize or join a work party on 10/10/10 to increase awareness of Global Warming.
Last night, I attended a community dinner at Bellingham Co Housing in Fairhaven and what I experienced there was memorable. Walking into a place where neighbors are involved in each other’s lives, where children have been born on the premises and locally grown food is prepared in a commonhouse kitchen were just a few of the things that stood out to me. After observing a video conference with 350.org leader Billy Gibbins, I was reminded of the importance of community. Building and participating in a community is the first step to changing our current situation. When we all live far away from each other in oversized houses, consuming products and gasoline with the click of a button, hiding in our caves with our internet connection, we are really missing something… That something is real connection with people. When we care about people, we will start to care more about ourselves and in turn we will care more about the planet we live on.
350.org is organizing 1300+ work parties in 125 different countries on 10/10/10 help bring new urgency and awareness to the climate change issue. The 350 number represents 350 parts per million Co2, which is the number that scientists say we need to get below in order for global warming to slow down. You can create your own work party, or join Fit Body Wellness’s work party which will be organized in the coming month (free yoga will naturally kick off our work party). Email me if interested in organizing or joining. You can live a yogic lifestyle, connecting with others and spreading love and contribute to the global warming issue.

You’re so right, Summer! Sustainability and community are very important. I wish I was here on 10/10/10 but I’ll be out of town. I’ll share your link with other folks…in Bellingham and beyond.
By the way, years ago I worked for a non-profit real estate developer in Seattle who developed the first cohousing project in Washington state and maybe one of the first in the U.S. to receive traditional project lending/financing – http://www.winslowcohousing.org/ They are still going strong.
